Constanze Schellow (Dr. phil.) is Juniorprofessor with a focus on Cultures of Knowledge and Dissemination in Dance at the Centre for Contemporary Dance at the University for Music and Dance Cologne. 2014-16 she was a guest professor for Applied Dance Studies and Performance Theory at the Interuniversity Center for Dance in Berlin.
After completing her academic and artistic studies in Theatre Studies, Philosophy and Performing Arts in Berlin and Antwerp Constanze has worked as freelance writer for print and web media with an emphasis on dance and performance. She was the founding editor of the Goethe-Institute-project “tanzconnexions”. In 2014 she finished her PhD on “Diskurs-Choreographien” (transcript 2015) in academic theories on contemporary dance since the 1990ties as a ProDoc-fellow of the Swiss National Science Foundation. The project was awarded the faculty prize of the University of Berne in 2014 and the Dance Studies Award NRW in 2016.
Constanze collaborates regularly as a dramaturge, e.g. with Eva Meyer-Keller, Simone Aughterlony and Doris Uhlich. Her current research project “Theoretical Turn? On the Institutionalisation of Theory/ies in Contemporary Dance” in collaboration with seven European study programs looks at the practices and the status of ‘teaching theory’ in contemporary dance education today. It is founded by the BMBF (German Federal Ministery for Education and Research) and is based at the CCD since 2018.
